One talking tree?

Published 12th October 2010 - 18 comments - 1674 views -

"Hello. I am a tree and this is my website.

I'll be online all day to keep you posted on how I feel..."

(The talking tree, talking-tree.com )

Well, this is something I had to write about,  as this is the first time I see what it would be like if a tree, or any plant in general, could "say and show how they felt online." Or is this only how US HUMAN think a TREE would SAY?

Apparently, a Belgian publication known as the EOS magazine decided to give a tree a voice, and "empower it to speak",  and let the world know how it feels.

The "talking tree", as it is known inside the international blogosphere, uses social networks such as Twitter or Facebook.

If you would like to know more about how do they measure what he sees and feels every single day do not miss the next video:

I would like to know how you feel about this post? Do you think the measures they are taking in order to know how the tree feels could be accurate? Do you think with this type of approach to our environment, maybe human beings could feel more related to plants and nature in general?

TH!NK ABOUT IT!

Great post. Ty. I have added her, I mean the talking tree smile.

Pabitra on 12th October 2010:

I not only liked your post, but immediately added Ms Tree as my new friend smile

Andrea Arzaba on 12th October 2010:

Haha thank you Pabitra!

I found really creative the way this magazine presents us the tree, I think with this campaign people might feel more connected to our surrounding environment

Pabitra on 13th October 2010:

Hi Andrea! If you really like this tree idea, please check this book “The Secret Life of Plants” by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. This book may change your life. Forever.

Andrea Arzaba on 13th October 2010:

Thank you Pabitra!
What is it about (I mean the title makes it a bit obvious) but TELL ME did it change your life??

Pabitra on 13th October 2010:

About the book: It’s a whole new approach towrads the plant’s life - their feelings and senses. For example, consider the experiment where a creeper gets to the right hole in a wall on the other side of which there is a nail! There are numbers of such holes in the wall only one one hole has a nail on the other side. It’s bizzare because, in the experiment the person who puts the greeper on one side of the wall does not know which hole has the nail on the other side. And the creeper gets to the right hole 10 out of 10 times! Well this is impossible with our 5 senses! And plant’s are supposedly without any sensory perceptions. Thats just one of many such interesting facts! And this book is thoroughly reserached.
About change in my life: Yes it did. I now believe that plants are a far more advanced and developed form of life than animals. They are extremely energy efficient, benevolent and incredibly tenacious. I gift my friends plants.
During 1991 - 1993, I was trying to stop erosion of a a small acretion island called “Nayachara” in the estuary of River Hugli. I was running out of my engineering ideas and failing badly. I turned to trees. Check this link : http://goo.gl/maps/FCZg , it shows a the tip of a dolphin shaped island (Nayachara) and the “beak’ of it shows a dark shaded area which contains more than 3000 mangrove trees (some 500 over hand planted by me). They did my job. When I left the island they were waist high. Today they are standing proud 30 over feet tall.
When I pass by them Andrea, yes I feel, the book changed my life a bit.

Pabitra!

Thank you so much for describing it! Now you made me wanna read it, I tried to find it on my local book store but they do not have it so I might try amazon. It sounds fantastic!

And another thing, I must express my LOVE and PASSIOn for your country smile I know one day I have to visit it!

Greetings from Mexico

Andrea Arzaba on 19th October 2010:

And thank you so much for the TED TALK video. I absolutely enjoyed it!

Pabitra on 20th October 2010:

Hi Andrea!
Nice to know that you enjoyed the talk. Thanks for your nice words about my country. It’s an incredible country really, and I wish that one day you sure visit India.

Yours is a wonderful country too. My connection with Mexico started when I was a 5 year old kid smile through stories of El Zorro that my mom introduced to. These days its all about fabulous Mexican food…I guess Indians and Mexicans strike similar chords with their food which is fiery yet unputdownable.

If you fail to collect the book I mentioned and do not mind a 20 Mb winrar file, I have an electronic version of it.

Looking forward to see many blog post of yours. All the best.

Jan Marcinek on 20th October 2010:

Great initiative. Maybe there can be detector for moving and talking when people walk around. I hope it will help.

Andrea Arzaba on 20th October 2010:

Great opinion! Maybe you should “contact the tree” and tell him (meaning contacting the project staff!)

Jan Marcinek on 20th October 2010:

Do you think? Probably it will be technologically challenging…

Andrea Arzaba on 22nd October 2010:

@ Pabitra: I would like to receive it! Do you have the book (or e-book) in English?

@ Jan: Why not? You might give them a GREAT idea =)!

Pabitra on 22nd October 2010:

Yes it is in English. Please download from this link:
