News: Climategate controversy reaches NASA data
Published 07th December 2009 - 6 comments - 2336 views -
CRU in East Anglia University is not the only climatology institute, which has been keeping its data secret for unknown reasons.
Christopher C. Horner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said NASA has refused for two years to provide information under the Freedom of Information.
McINTYRE 2007
It started in 2007, when Steve McIntyre wanted to audit the NASA climate data. But NASA refused to provide him their data and methods for verification. Why? What were they hiding? But he managed to reverse-engineer the data anyway (comparing the raw data and the published results).
He discovered a huge error - NASA erroneously overestimated the value of present temperatures. Possibly due to a Y2K error? Or they falsified data on purpose? It is interesting to know, that the sloppy worker responsible for this NASA cock-up was Jim Hansen, a global warming guru.
NASA had to correct its data and found that 1934, not 1998, was the hottest year in its records for the contiguous 48 states.
See: http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=1880
After the correction the data was like this: "Four of the top 10 are now from the 1930s: 1934, 1931, 1938 and 1939, while only 3 of the top 10 are from the last 10 years (1998, 2006, 1999). Several years (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) fell well down the leaderboard, behind even 1900."
To hide their past errors, NASA erased the old erroneous data: "The old data has been erased; by sheer chance, I had the old data active in my R-session but I can't give a link to it," says McIntyre.

Graph: US TEMPERATURES (After Hansen corrected his sloppy work): 1934 the hottest year in USA. No sign of warming since 1930s
Note: In my home country, the Czech Republic, there is a renowned temperature measuring station Klementinum (since 18th century!). It does not show any significant warming either. So... In which part of the world the warming does exist, anyway???
Speculation: I do not care if the World is warming terribly. Because in my location and in any other specific location, the warming is almost invisible.
HORNER 2009
It is odd, that NASA later changed its data again, and now 1998 and 2006 are tied for the hottest years again, with 1934 listed as slightly cooler in USA. What happened?
Mr. Horner, a noted skeptic of global warming and author of "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism," wants a look at the data and the discussions that went into those changes. He said he's given the agency until the end of the year to comply or else he'll sue to compel the information's release.
Mark Hess, public affairs director for the Goddard Space Flight Center, which runs the NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) laboratory, said officials are working on Mr. Horner's request, though he couldn't say why they have taken so long.

BEFORE 2007 McIntyre correction: The Warming in USA was apparently "manmade". Made by Jim Hansen's falsification of data. You just cut a bit of the curve off and move it a bit upward.
More discussion about Hansen's errors here: http://wattsupwiththat.com/page/4/?s=hansen+giss
If you want to graph a non-existing warming, there is also another way. Just place some temperature measuring stations near sources of heat. And grill the data! How do you want your data, sir, raw, rare or medium?
CONCLUSION: After Climategate the solar deniers stick to a phrase, that "some e-mails cannot change the consensus, that the climate has warmed up." Sorry, but in USA and Czech Republic there is no warming. It is not warmer than in 1930s. The 1970s-1998 warming just got us back to the temperatures we had in 1930s or in Middle Ages. It has not warmed since 1930. It has not warmed since MWP.

i don’t know bout the czech republic but we here in Austria experience warming. Our institute made a study on the influence of global warming on agricultural production at the Marchfeld (which is very close to the borders of the czech republic). instead of relying on IPCC scenarios, a linear trend was extrapolated from Austrian weather stations, starting from 1970 on. there is a very clear, positive trend in the data. check http://oega.boku.ac.at/fileadmin/user_upload/Tagung/2009/Short_paper_2009/59-Strauss_et_al_TB_OEGA2009.pdf for a short presentation of the research. the journal publication is currently in peer review.

Oh my god. Of course after 1970 there is some warming trend. Climate always changes. A few decades warming, then a few decades cooling, then a few decades warming.
But now it is approximately as hot as in 1930s or in MWP. Oceans seem to have warmed greatly. But many regions of land not.
It is funny, that denialists like Hemant or Benno or Federico are missing from this discussion.
They have no arguments. Nothing to day.
They used to say, that the CRU frauds were just a local cock-up of one or two climatologists… Well, as you can see the problems are not limitted to East Anglia.
you are right. the 1970 time-series is not enough. Here we go, the data for Vienna:
http://static.orf.at/vietnam2/images/site/science/20091250/T01_WIE_year.jpg
according to this data, it wasn’t warmer in the 1930ies. (when looking at the 20 years low pass filter). there is one extraordinary hot year in the 1930ies. that’s it. so i wonder why your data is showing a different picture. any explanation?
It is clear that NASA can make mistakes. Everywhere people work. But the mistakes must be recognized, and not hide.
Maybe this is not an error, and the government order?
Or is something whose financial interests ...
