Extreme Recycling?

Translated & adapted transcript (voice over only)

Ever since she was 16, she's been working hard to achieve this and now, at 71, she wants to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

Ioana Cioanca (a Romanian woman from Bistrita-Nasaud) 'plaits' her hair in a special way. She turns it into clothes. As she doesn't hesitate to wear them on occasions, this is one lady with quite a reputation.

To become soft and resistant before being turned into a coat, her hair is given special treatment. Carefully gathered after each brushing, it goes through the same processes as any type of wool: washing, spinning and dying.

The friends of the 71 years old lady have never ceased to confess their admiration for her works. Nonetheless, when put in front of the hair wardrobe, they find reasons to avoid trying any creations.  Ioana Cioanca now owns no less than eight pieces of clothes and accessories (a hat, a shawl, a skirt, a blouse, a raincoat, a purse, a handbag and a pair of gloves), all woven from her own hair.

Is this something you would consider as a "reduce, reuse, recycle" option?

This is what you would consider eco-psychosis.

Anita Kalmane on 09th October 2009:

This is weird! But interesting.

Adela on 09th October 2009:

@Mike - You’re everywhere!

@Anita - I agree with the bizarre thing. The video doesn’t actually say anything about recycling, but it’s an interesting perspective.

Daniel on 16th October 2009:

Haha, it is cool smile

Do you know if clothes made by human hair has a tradition somewhere in the world?

I guess it couldn’t replace normal clothes, after all 8 clothes after 55 years is not so much. But I think it is a great inspiration. I think we could be much more creative in reusing, and recycling. :

Abhishek Nayak on 16th October 2009:

I hope we never reach such a day!
I already find it queasy that people wear their dog’s hair.

Adela on 16th October 2009:

@Daniel - In fact this post was inspired from the very start by Phillipe Starck’s show “Design for Life” (search for it on vimeo). One of the girls there had an idea about creating clothes from lint. And I remembered seeing the video about this Romanian woman, hence the post.

I don’t know if there are communities that have this tradition. (But yeah, it’s possible)

@Abhishek I know the feeling. This is obviously bizarre. But it’s a proof that alternatives exist.
