Climategate

It looks as if the website of the "respected" Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia is experiencing difficulties, which lends credence to reports that its servers have been hacked. Among the files that have been "released" is this e-mail. If its contents are real, a major scandal is brewing. One that could do serious damage to the global warming argument:
From: Phil Jones

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim's got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow.
I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.
Cheers
Phil

You can read lots more of the correspondence here. No one wants to believe that the professionals have been falsifying the numbers, but if it turns out to be true…

Eamonn, I don’t care if the files were hacked or tricked, as long as the weather outside tells me it’s summer when it should be almost winter.
Adela, I guess you are not in Alaska, then. http://bit.ly/6mRNnR
Funny, but I am not in mood to laugh ..
Maybe Fairbanks’s where all the degrees from our winter fled.
Insane environuts will rationalise anything to justify their extremist ideals.
The story has just gone mainstream (media):
“Hacked E-Mail Is New Fodder for Climate Dispute”, says the New York Times. http://bit.ly/7XKJdf
See response here:

This is embarrassing indeed, but unfortunately, it is how science works. Or rather, how many scientists work, on both sides, undoubtedly.
“More interesting is what is not contained in the emails. There is no evidence of any worldwide conspiracy, no mention of George Soros nefariously funding climate research, no grand plan to ‘get rid of the MWP’, no admission that global warming is a hoax, no evidence of the falsifying of data, and no ‘marching orders’ from our socialist/communist/vegetarian overlords.”
Yes… embarrasing in case the emails are genuine, but I doubt it.
Anyway… I agree with Adela here. It is interesting how sceptics are throwing all their rage at IPCC, and the “climate change machinery” while the world is changing around them.
Read Earl’s link.
Here’s another: Stolen CRU emails: Who are the criminals behind the conspiracy theorists?
“This cabal of climate deniers seems to think that 12 year-old emails between climate scientists somehow refutes the thousands of research papers produced over decades by thousands of researchers at some of the best scientific institutions in the world.”
Benno Hansen is absolutely right.
“the thousands of research papers produced over decades by thousands of researchers (as in Dr. Phil Jones) at some of the best scientific institutions (as at CRU) in the world. (as in “I’ve used Mann’s “Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series”…to hide the decline” quoted from Jones’ email.”
As Einstein said “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong.”.
Climategate - genius!! where are the rest of the emails? I for one cannot wait to see them!
Lara, here they are:

Do you know, that the swinders are the core IPCC team?
“The University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU), usually working together with the Hadley center (recall HadCRUT3 global temperatures). (quoted from Motl’s blog)
And a quote from
http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/images/stories/papers/originals/McLean_IPCC_bias.pdf>
“Hadley Centre deserves special note because not only did it supply nine authors but also 9 of the 62 reviewers of this chapter.”
I am talking about the 2007 IPCC report, Chapter 9 about the causes of climate change. Having cca 44 authors.
The core of them were these frauds and swindlers.
Good work, Eamon, by the way. I almost missed the news.
If you wish to read more funny e-mail from the impostors, go to the blog of a world known Czech physicist Motl(his blog was awarded prizes for excelency):
http://motls.blogspot.com/2009/11/hacked-hadley-cru-foi2009-files.html
Such as: “I really wish I could be more positive about the Kyrgyzstan material, but I swear I pulled every trick out of my sleeve trying to milk something out of that.”
Or: “I don’t think it’d be productive to try and juggle the chronology statistics any more than I already have”
The e-mails could be forged, of course. But I trust it, because it is in line with the previous moral standards in the hockey-stick team. Such as composing the IPCC work groups of old friends (Manus manum lavat)

IT’S ALL OVER FOLKS. WE WON, GO HOME.
Did you read Monbiots’s post, Mike? There is more to be proven than the fact that the University of East Anglia had a bad research culture ten years ago…
