when “go green” becomes “go commercial”

So, we have presidential elections...

Electing president of the country should be a serous job, don't you think so? I live in Croatia, it is a parliamentary republic but still I can have "wish list" of characteristics for my "wanna be" president. And the best thing, democracy gives me the right to elect one who I think fits the best that standard. So the perfect candidate should be honest, patriotic, wise, serious,  knowledgeable man or woman who can defend our interests or presents us in best possible light.

OK, this could be some general common sense wish? Or "common sense" is not AGAIN common...

"Greens" in Croatia are a minor party. Forget the situation in Germany, here they hardly manage to have one representative in minor cities in local elections. People do not take them seriously. "Greens" still have stigma of "some not serious hippies".

I wanted to believe that is just a stupid stereotype. If France can elect 13 members for the European Parliament than little Croatia can at least open the gate of regional politics to them. They did not pass the threshold in Split. My vote did not make a difference but I still think that the idea "Let's Croatia go green", for me as at that time unemployed environmental scientist was the best choice. That was last spring...

But this December we have presidential elections...

The "Greens" decided to give me a "cold shower" – I guess it is less energy consuming ...

Few days ago the Croatian Greens – Zelena Lista - decided to support one president candidate, an independent one. Explanation: the rest of the candidates did not put environmental protection and environment in any of their key points, so they decided to support alternative one.

It makes sense; if you are "Greens" that is the first thing that you pay attention to.

But boys and girls in 'Green party' why that lady? Why?

Croatian Greens are supporting Alka Vuica, Croatian pop-folk singer and song-writer. Let's face it - she is not stupid, personally she amuses me from time to time with her bright cynical comments, with her scandals and her fur-pink leopard-PVC outfits. I consider her brave that she even decided to run for President. OK, self-promotion, marketing, she is getting older, it's recession now and it is hard to keep that sexy-hot-crazy look when you are in your late 40s.  I completely understand her.

Alka Vuica- President for new politics; Let’s save Croatia together – Zelena lista

I do not understand the Greens...

Even if they did not go into deep of her political program which I tried to find desperately but it is not available on line.

Even if they closed their eyes on stupidity like "we should be like an island, taking care of ourselves no matter what the rest of Europe does" and pretend not to see empty clams in her "letter to the nation".

Even if they decided to forget all her scandals and her "semi-underground" friends.

There is one moment which they just can't neglect.

It is PVC outfits, oh yes, forget cotton, "my dear Greens" she is most of the time dressed in different type of plastic materials or fur. You lost hard core Green or PETA supporters with that.  If you did not know plastic is a type of waste and waste management is one of the priorities in Croatian environmental programs. Ms. Vuica's footprint is quite big in that sense.

Think about it...

…and maybe, just maybe… you will come to the same conclusion as I did..

pssst… You know, but any publicity is not good publicity, no matter what they told you.

:( I hope the Bulgarians Zelenite will stay away from flirting with Chalga (BG pop folk) singers. Not that I have much against them as pop artists ,but…

That’s stupid sense of politics. That’s a reason I do not vote for greens - there is just that green hippy thinking .. and if this is a political move, how you can trust anything concerning education, finance, development to this party .. there is no trust credit.

  • Lovorka on 12th November 2009:

@Daniel: I am still ignorant regarding Chalga wink

@Aija: I think it sad that when it comes to elections we more and more often pick “less evil”. Anyway, I think it is good to have “Greens”. With smt. even radical view they push borders of “ordinary” politicians

  • Aija Vanaga on 12th November 2009:

@Lovorka: It is good to have, but Greens must have sense in politics they want to do.

I am environmentalist, but environment is not only fight we are on and if Greens can’t have reasonable and credible opinion about other important stuff than they are not on ‘evil’ or ‘less evil’ level but on ‘circus’ .. And that is no better choice.

  • Paul Montariol on 16th November 2009:

The problem with ecologists is that they have each an opinion different of each other.
It is impossible that it would be else!
