Eco-friendly solutions to multiple development and growth challenges

The dual goals of improving energy security and addressing climate change are not irreconcilable: achieve adequate, dependable and economical energy supply for India while decreasing emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Decreasing our dependence on import of coal and oil- our primary energy sources- by replacing them with scalable low carbon sources like renewable energy would enhance energy security.

Some urban problems can be solved parallel to reducing emissions from buildings and transport. Indian cities are groaning under problems of congestion, safety and pollution in transportation. Simply introducing efficiency standards and improving public transport by introducing bus lanes or rapid transit systems and funding this by increasing taxation of personal vehicles, would decrease the problems. Currently the major Indian public transport is the bus system, which is not developed enough to cater to the growing demand.

Similarly enforcing building efficiency standards and electrical appliance standards would decrease electricity consumption and ease the pressure on our grids. The demand for electrical appliances in India is nowhere near the developed world but with the market is set to explode with increasing urban wealth. All Indian cities already suffer from a power deficit and this is set to increase rapidly.

India faces the formidable challenges of inclusive growth and sustainable development. Nearly 500mn Indians have no access to an electric grid and connecting them to the grid is a major developmental challenge being tackled by the government. Promoting decentralized electricity through renewable energy in the far flung rural areas would have no emissions and also jumpstart the local economies.

Thus moving to a low emissions economy need not necessarily be expensive.

Hear hear!  I get really annoyed when people ask me “what about all the jobs that will be lost by using less plastic and oil”...

We have to think “What about all the jobs that will be created?”

Oil-based jobs will be lost soon anyway.  We should ensure job security AND environmental cleanliness in our country by switching to a clean, responsible, and ethically viable way of life.

India has all the resources it ever will need: each and every citizen.

Increasing efficiency has a very small capital outlay, with big benefits in the end.  How can anyone ignore the benefits?

    I can’t agree more.
Would you believe that ‘In Europe 3.4 million jobs are already directly related to the low carbon economy, compared to 2.8 million jobs in polluting industries.’ Read more here: http://bit.ly/3c36W9

The low carbon economy has massive potential to create employment and wealth.

can this actually come true ?

“Promoting decentralized electricity through renewable energy in the far flung rural areas would have no emissions and also jumpstart the local economies.” : Brilliant idea!

@ujjwal I think its possible. the govt is anyways trying to shift to renewable sources and provide continuous supply of electricity, so why not aim the villages.

    Very insightful!

  • Mike on 06th November 2009:

Renewable energies require massive amounts of raw materials, massive amounts of land, are geographically limited, perpetually unreliable and above all extremely expensive.

For a country like India who lacks the resources, the land and the money for such ventures, you will not find energy security in renewable energy. CO2 is not a pollutant, what you need is not more “energy efficient” technologies, just some better pollution control, some catalytic convertors and few hundred million less people.

  • Paul Montariol on 30th November 2009:

The prices will be lowered if all countries goes in that direction.
