The Hanging Garden of Anghel Zeicu

Published 07th November 2009 - 15 comments - 719 views -

As green spaces are more and more scarce around here, a Romanian man from Resita solved his needs in a different way. He developed his personal "hanging garden": a green oasis on the roof of the apartment building where he lives. His name is Anghel Zeicu and he's 79 years old.

Nevertheless, age doesn't count when one has a dream. The man brought fertile soil from the outskirts of the city and started growing his unique garden. "First I filled my balcony with flowers. When there was no more space in the balcony, I went on the roof, where I arranged a garden. I fixed a trailer onto my bicycle and brought soil from Sura. I have everything I need here. Flowers, vegetables, even vines and sunflowers, "said the lovely retired old man.

His hanging garden was designed in the smallest detail. "When I started, I had to solve the crucial water issue first. I had to find a way to avoid overconsumption of tap water. I made some metal spouts and directed them to one big 500 litres barrel which collects all the rain that I now use to water my garden." says Anghel Zeicu

In the short videos, he also explains that tomatoes should have already been ripen and that he no longer rides the bike so often because of his age.

It’s a great thing to do, especially if you live in a polluted city. Fresh and clean air at your fingertips smile

Awesome smile I love the idea, and the fact that he just fulfilled his dream, without asking for help or permission. Just doing it. We should all live like that.

Daniel, see Scandinavian Green Roof for some great other projects. You might be even interested in seeing some as they’re not far from you.

Thanks for the link! I don’t know of any projects nearby, but on the other hand green roofs would actually be a little overkill in little Lund, which has more trees than houses smile
