Lightning idea: LEDs powered by solar panels

About 1.6 billion people - 25% of Earth population - over the world can not access electricity. It is an unthinkable thing to the others 75% of humanity. Almost all of our activities are based on this kind of energy. What about using technology to solve two problems: end the lack of electricity and obtain it in a sustainable way?

That was the idea behind the system developed by Philips and launched simultaneously at South Africa and Netherlands. The system can light a 40m x 20m area and is portable. This LEDs can provide 8 hours of light with an only solar charge. Former Nigerian soccer player Kanu is promoting the limelight system over the world.

Orders of the device can be already made. You can order only the limelights or the complete system: batteries and solar panels. This type of lightining can be used in emergencies caused by natural catastrophes, remote villages, small shops and night classes. Visit project site for further informatons. The idea reminds me One laptop per Child project - the computers were being used in various regions of Southest Asia to provide light at home.

In the past two centuries we needed to use fossil fuels and it was the right choice to do.

But using the solar energy is the next logical step. It is shining free of charge, after all.

See my article about nano-solar too.
