Lessons from Copenhagen - Make it Public

It seems that centralized and common infrastructure is a major reason for the sustainable success Denmark has seen so far.  As Danish sustainability expert Malene Freudendal-Pedersen (Assistant professor with a PhD in taransportation),  shows in these clips from an interview I had with her last week, such systems are often more efficient and are easier to make large-scale sustainble modifications to.  Also, as an individual, the global climate issue can seem impossible to tackle and incredibly overwhelming - it's usually much more encouraging to tackle it as a public.

Going back over this interview has gotten me to wonder: could a lack of centralized public systems be a major reason why the US has been lagging behind in sustainable development?  It is certainly true that the centrality of the US's infrastrucutre cannot compare to that of Denmark if what Malene has described is true.  The notion of "district heating" as mentioned in the interview is something that is barely dreamed in most of my country (the exception being some dense city centers).

Tune in to the next post for a Danish opinion of the US.

I do think centralized systems are quite important - do they have to be public then - well they could be private but one might suspect that they would not serve everybody then…and that is the whole point when talking about sustainability
