Kids ecology goes better online, then offline

In Bulgarian schools kids don`t learn about ecology. At least as far as I know in my and my friends` experience. Of course we have learned things like chemistry, physics and sports. So, but if you think carefully all of those 3 are independent, but from another point of view connected – in the ecology.

Ecology is part of the personal choice, not only the scientists use words like eco, bio and green. This is a lifestyle, way of thinking and representing, for some – even peculiarity. Ecology is more like social science, because for example in Bulgaria the mentality of the people can`t get used to all of these little, but ordered things, which impose restrictions only for ecological reasons.

Maybe because we haven`t started to think about the after-effects. What is a normal day for a Bulgarian, going to work?

It`s early in the morning, he takes a long shower. Then he drinks some coffee and goes alone with his car to work. On the way he puts some gas in the car. Then he goes to work, where he puts the radio on, the computer, maybe the air-conditioner, the lamp on his table also and then he goes to the public kitchen to make a tea for himself.

He takes a big boiling pitcher, fill it with water and connects it with the electricity. Then he decides maybe to eat also a sandwich from the toasted ones. He takes some cheese from the package in the fridge, two slices of bread, combines them and put all of that in the electrical of course toaster. Meanwhile the water has become hot and he fills his glass with it, before he takes a tea package. The rest of the hot water goes in the sink.

A colleague shows up also there and both start chatting. If it is allowed in the building they light up a cigarette. Then our guy’s nose senses that something is burning. He jumps to the toaster, which is showing a red light already, unplugs it and sees his burnt sandwich. He turns the tap while speaking with his colleague and starts to clean up his “workspace”.

After that he goes back to work and at some point he needs to use the printer for some notes. They are only for him, but when he sees that there is no paper inside he puts a pack of brand new sheets and starts printing. He takes his printed sheet and when he has finished with it, makes a ball of it and throw it in the basket.

In the lunch break he buys some sandwich with potatoes from McDonalds or Burger king and then throws what is left from it in the first seen wastebasket. Our man lefts his cup of Coke on some bench and goes with a fast step to work.

In the evening he goes home, ordinary – alone in his car. There he turns on all of the lights in the flat. He turns the TV on and goes to have some dinner. Then he decides to check his Twitter and goes to start his computer too. Meanwhile he has forgotten the light in the bathroom, where he started the water in the sink to clean a spot of his new t-shirt.

How could you make this day different, so that we don`t use that much energy, don`t waste water, don`t pollute the air by creating more traffic jam, eat sustainable food and use twice paper? I am not sure people can quit their conveniences. Maybe you can learn that in school – maybe if there are teachers, representing the seriousness of the situation by good, practical examples? Are there companies that care about the children’s first step in a greener world and who are they? How they do that? Maybe there are computer programs which help the little fellows by understanding the necessity of bioliving? Also some artists show up their crazy ideas about the ecology in songs videos, theater peaces or movies. So, it is all around us. We can deside how to treat it.

It happens pretty much the same in Romania. And sustainable living here is just a matter of mentality, self-education and self-imposed choices.

  • nikkin on 26th September 2009:

That’s so true, but unfortunately no one realizes it… Even us, the ones who pretend to fight it…

  • Federico Pistono on 27th September 2009:

You touched a central topic, Lucy: education and civil responsibility are arguably the most important factors.

If people were taught to develop sensitivity around the problems of the environment, the world would probably very much different.

  • Lucy Setian on 27th September 2009:

Thank you, Federico, hopefully we can continue discussing the topic in next materials.

It is good to begin by child.
But after: I have looked at the map and I saw that you have the black sea on your east.
The new energies on the sea can give you all the energy you need. Your country is small.
Then the question is to store energy.
It is expensive but we have no other solution.

  • Lucy Setian on 16th November 2009:

For small countries it is very suitable. However it is an investment, which the government cannot cover in a time of global crisis. Here come the new corporations, which are green and want to open a new green market after COP15.

  • Paul Montariol on 17th November 2009:

    I hope you will have.

Maybe which starts like this: http://climatechange.thinkaboutit.eu/think2/post/green_innovation_forum_how_to_grow_our_business_by_green_investments
