Is Avatar REALLY the best that they can make ?

So... I went to cinema to watch Avatar.

3 hours. It was not Bruce Willis saving the world so this was a minus. I just can't help myself but I somehow prefer Bruce doing that job.

Regarding other aspects, hmm... imagine really fantastically made and long intro into the 'shooting type' computer game. Did you? Now spice it up with with moral environmental dilemma of the main character? You did. OK boys and girls, you got Avatar. Computer animation - perfect, plot - zero, zero individuality of characters, a blockbuster that you have to see.

But let's go back to the ecological theme. I refuse to believe that main stream American cinematography produces just stupid movies. So I did a bit of research... my goal was to find a good movie that included climate change in it. It took me some time but I have to inform you that I was not successful. From Costner's Waterworld (which if you ask me is noting except a worse-water version of Mad Max 3) to The day after tomorrow (I admit I could not even watch it till the end) everything is pretty dumb. It can be amusing but let's face it - it is dumb.

It is a bit painful that no one managed to make an amusing (and realistic) movie on the topic after which you will really stop and start thinking whether such things are happening now or can happen to us in the future. It seems that climate change can be just used because it gives a great opportunity for computer designers to create cities destroyed under tsunami wave, or high tech rooms somewhere in the basement of Cape Canaveral .

.

Of course this approach to high tech explosions does not make you think about the subject, it makes you just stare there as a zombie. You do not think, you just 'kill time' and next day you do not think about it any more. And if somebody asks about the movie you will just recall some explosion or fantastic car race. It is a bit sad that Hollywood manages to make fantastic war movies with some moral story in it but when it comes to environmental topic or climate change no way...

So what can we do? I do not know... I am not a director, I do not know any director/producer/scriptwriter or anybody in film industry. I also do not plan to make movies, I just like to watch them. So until a commercial blockbuster with great effects and normal story hits us, I am stuck to documentaries. Effects are maybe crappier but at least the story in it is not so shallow.

P.S. I found a list for those who wants to kill time in long winter nights when there is nothing on TV except another Christmas happy (wedding) ending movie
