Greenpeace on the roof: CLIMATE CLOCK IS TICKING

Published 12th October 2009 - 5 comments - 634 views -

23 people climbed on to the roof of Britain's Houses of Parliament for a protest to urge ministers to overhaul climate change policies.

The December 7-18 United Nations climate summit in Copenhagen will see nations attempt to hammer out a new global climate treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012.

A banner is seen hung near Big Ben after Greenpeace demonstrators scaled the roof of the Parliament. In shameful embarrassing breach of Westminster security, the protesters took fewer than 10 minutes to slide ladders through the railings surrounding the building and then use them to climb on to one of the lower roofs.

The people who climbed on to the roof have been arrested. Despite of that they were seen, heard and admired. Hope we will feel the same after December.

In March 2004, Greenpeace demonstrators scaled the landmark clock tower on the first anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. 2 months later, campaigners threw condoms full of purple flour in the lower House of Commons, hitting then-prime minister Tony Blair. 4 months on, 5 protesters got into the chamber to protest during a hunting ban debate. And protesters got onto the roof in February 2008 to demonstrate against a planned third runway at London's Heathrow airport.

Here in the Czech Republic the Greenpeace did the same thing yesterday. However to me it seems strange. Warming stopped (or was paused) ten years ago. So why panic?

It seems too much similar to religiion. Imagine the guys held different banners “Second Coming of Jesus is near. Repent! Time is running out!”

See? Maybe the whole warming hysteria is just the same old sociological behaviour. Like thousand years ago. Doomsday. Chilliasm.

Prophets of doom standing on streetcorners and urging the passers-by to turn to God, before the Judgment Day comes.

Peter, great letter. You should translate it and repost it. It is useful for our political audience to take some real “action” sometimes. I am not sure how our eco minister will act there, but hopefully she will offer some projects and real measures and not only prick the bubble.

    Climate clock ticking?

There is no physical mechanism linking anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions to observed rises in global mean average temperature during the 20th century.

It seems you don`t keep up well informed, dear Mike.
