Going, Going, Gone.

In Romania, we have a saying. One doesn't fatten a pig on Christmas Eve. In short, it means that no good outcome can come out of forced & delayed imposed state of affairs. And it seems this is exactly what leaders have been doing on the last 100 metres at COP15. For God's sake, there have already been 2 years of countless, expensive high level meetings and discussions about a fair, ambitious and binding legal agreement. (If it's THAT hard, just skip all the apparent useless meetings and invest the expenses in the Climate Fund. Moving money from Foreign Aid to Climate Adaptation is like rubbing a wooden leg.) I can't believe that almost nothing has been achieved until the last several hours.

According to a senior US administration official, the United States, China, India and South Africa have reached a "meaningful agreement" on climate change. Or so does the media say. President Barack Obama, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and South African President Jacob Zuma discussed behind closed doors (in the last 2 days only 300 out of 10k accredited people have been allowed inside the Bella Center) and may have found their way out of the mess COP15 seems to have turned.

Although media calls it a deal, in Copenhagen it's received a bit differently.

Rumors from inside the Bella Centre say that G-77 complained about receiving a note about this"meaningful agreement" only after the media had got it. Nothing is currently known about EU, whether they're going to sign it. Somewhat predictable, Copenhagen pushed for an agreement (with their name on it) maybe a bit too much, because there are voices that say they wanted this more than a strong deal, evidenced by replacing the green fund Mexico proposed weeks ago with the “Copenhagen Green Fund”.

As I write this, there are over 100 people who protest in front of the Bella Center. Avaaz & Oxfam members along with other citizens of the world peacefully try to make a point underlined so many times before. A half hypocritical 'come out of cop15 clean' outcome does not help anybody (and especially developing countries) and the latest events remind me of something I read on a climate related playing card - "The Maldives are putting cash away to buy a new home, because they'll be sunk soon. - Evin E, United States" - Basically for Maldives, COP15 is proving to be a Russian Roulette, the richer gambling with the lives of the people of the islands while they can't do anything, they can't even decide their own fate.

Live blogging on the events at the Bella Centre.

Bad news of the moment. Obama's rumored to have left the building
Good news of the moment. EU may possible pledge for 40% cuts by 2020 to secure a binding agreement here.

It's going to be a long night.

Politicians(I cant call them the Leaders.) came showing their hands full of chips of gold & already departed while we come to know chips are made of golden color steel.
They Might Think We can be fooled…

Aditya - It’s incredible how money changes everything and turns man into voracious beast.

If it hadn’t been for the money and interests behind, a binding treaty would have probably been already signed.

ONe doesn’t fatten a pig on christmas eve… I think that is one of the best sum ups I’ve read so far wink

  • Adela on 19th December 2009:

I’ve read something earlier, that although EU didn’t agree with the accord, they still signed.

If they didn’t agree they should have pledged more and go to 40% or they shouldn’t have signed anything. Complaining about it & then signing turns this ‘agreement’ even more hypocritical.
