EU Leaders : ‘Wait and see’ attitude

'Climate Change' has made it to the headlines this week.

European and international broadcasters/journalists reiterated the 'two magic' words a couple of times during their links, reports or news updates during and following the two-day EU Heads of States Summit in Brussels.

Regrettably, as expected, all 27 Head of States failed to commit any specific sums to fund climate change in developing countries, arguing they will delay their decision just after the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen.

They're adopting a kids strategy of just 'wait and see'.

The only statement in the Summit's conclusions is that EU will make its 'fair share'.

Last September, the European Commission suggested that this share should be in the range of €2 and €15 billion a year.

It seems that the Swedish Presidency, backed by other member states such as United Kingdom and Denmark, had to bow to the demands of a group of nine Eastern European member states led by Poland, who were worried that they would end up paying more than they could afford and wanted to make any contributions to upfront funds voluntary.

Rightly so, a number of NGOs and the Greens are disappointed with the European leaders attitude on climate funding.

In light of this EU Summit, I really that world leaders will not miss the boat in Copenhagen on a post Kyoto deal on climate change.

Will wait and see!

I laughed when I read that our prime minister was so happy like a fox on a chicken plate who “traded” that Bulgaria won`t pay that much as rich countries shall. It was like the big attainment he had done for the country. NGOs are disappointed in the most of the time, so they can say whatever they wish, but EC is giving the money after all and they think on how it must be splitted.

It is true, Lucy. I think it is kind of the role of NGO’s to be disappointed with everything, it would be very sad if they did not demand more than the politicians.

Let’s hope that these money get paied out. I am sceptical, but I would love to be proven wrong. smile

It is necessary to look at these things into positive: the green techs: it is a very large market which opens!
