Design with Energy in Mind: Jean Canfield Building

Published 04th November 2009 - 24 comments - 1168 views -

The Jean Canfield Building in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, opened in 2008 and consolidated federal employees from many different departments into a new facility.

The building was planned from the very beginning to be energy efficient and sustainable and the plan that was developed for its design included not only energy conservation measures, but also on-site electricity generation from roof-mounted solar panels.

The building uses 60% less energy than an average Canadian office building, and shows by example that it's possible to construct buildings that use less energy without compromising utility or comfort.

Larry Jones was project lead architect for local firm Bergmark Guimond Hammarlund Jones Architects that, with partner HOK designed the Jean Canfield Building.

One afternoon last week Larry took me on a "cook's tour" of the building.

Nice work Peter. I also quite enjoy the fact that having visited PEI I know in what kind of context this is taking place. It adds depth to my ‘listening’ watching your video.

    Thank you, Peter and Larry,

The work in progress here is inspiring. I’m now going to have to rethink my planning for my “next” home.
I also have a responsibility to educate my co-workers, because our energy footprint is much larger than it should be. There is no reason, really, why our schools shouldn’t be “reworked” to take advantage of the advances in solar and geothermal energy (I work for a regional school district).

You are onto something - schools are a great place to start.

Here is a post that shows the opportunity on PEI plus I have added a short video of a test Pellet Furnace in a PEI school - has all the numbers as well

I can see that too many factory or company never really put energy in their mind when they are making new buildings. I hope everyone has the same thought and idea as yours.
