Banner warned the G20 masters for the danger of the Climate Destruction
14 activists of the world eco organization Greenpeace have been arrested in the US city Pitsburg on the eve of the Group of 20 summit Wednesday, informs AP.
The reason was ordinary – a poster. In the morning the activists rappelled off of a Pittsburgh bridge with a massive banner displaying our message to G20 leaders gathering for tomorrow’s summit. The poster takes the form of stylized “road sign” that warns of the political maneuvering and delay that have put a international climate treaty in jeopardy as the world enters the final stretch on the road to Copenhagen (COP15 meeting). I am sure though they know well about it.
The warning of the danger to the planet’s climate from carbon dioxide emissions caused an arrest. So what? We shall wait till we die in our calm end of living of more 70-80 years and whatever what happens next with the planet? (or in the meanwhile)
8 protesters manned the banner, which stayed open with the weight of 4 people dangling over the Ohio River. The protesters, equipped professionally with climbing ropes, harnesses, helmets and other safety gear, surrendered two hours later. A 9th person helping them also was arrested.
In the meantime, 5 people wearing harnesses and preparing to rappel off another span, the Fort Pitt Bridge, were arrested, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. The “dangerous” suspects faced various charges, including possession of an instrument of a crime, disorderly conduct, conspiracy and obstruction. At least this is the official version.
The mood between police and the West End Bridge protesters was cordial. When a heavy shower moved through, one officer handed a rain slicker to a female activist. Many passing motorists reacted to the kind-of-a spectacle situation, some honking and others shouting. One shouted, “Cut the ropes!”
"8 Greenpeace activists scaled the iconic West End Bridge and dropped a 24 meter by nine meter banner off the side at about 10:45 am," Greenpeace campaign coordinator Gabe Wisniewski told AFP. "Our actions in Pittsburgh are a wake-up call from our militants. They're mainly young people who were really inspired by Obama but don't think he's taken a leadership role in climate change," he said in conclusion.
Besides the warning message on the banner, Greenpeace wants President Barack Obama to place the United States firmly in a leading role as the world tackles environmental issues, Wisniewski said.
"Our only permit is our feet and voices," the Web site of the Pittsburgh Resistance Project, an umbrella orga
nization of protest groups, proclaimted earlier. "The G-20 is in the house, throwing a party. Let's crash it."
Wednesday evening’s rally was backed by the Alliance for Climate Protection, a group founded by former Vice President Al Gore, the United Steelworkers union and a Steelworkers-Sierra Club coalition. Several hundred people attended it, filling about half the chairs set out in front of a stage at the city’s downtown Point State Park. The turnout may have been hampered by occasional showers or the city’s plans to effectively cut off most downtown transportation later in the evening in anticipation of the summit.
The 34-years old Daniel Fuller, from Youngstown, Ohio, who is unemployed, came on the happening on a bus with other 60 people. “I’m not of the stripe that breaks windows and so forth. But from my perspective, a slightly more hopeful inclination, we just want them to act on behalf of the little man, places like Youngstown, Ohio,” Fuller explained. “We desperately need jobs.”
A 57-year-old Pittsburgher who works for the Steelworkers, was there to support renewable energy. She said it can provide decent employment, improve the environment and lessen the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
“I think that we are in an economic and environmental crisis and we have to think, how we can get out of that crisis?”
Everything seems nice. But if you want to do something you don`t just put poster over bridges, fight up with ecological maniacs or call for help. Nothing has ever happened in the human history just because of complaints. You offer a plan for reducing the CO2 Emissions, for stopping deforestment, Ocean acidification and etc.
It is all about action, not complaining.

You are right Lucy: Nothing has ever happened in the human history just because of complaints.
Love the poster !!! Great job
As you said “action, not complaining”. I hope it had effekt ot the people
Very realistic point of view, Lucy! Congrats for the great article and keep going on with this. We all should open wide our eyes.
Hey Lucy,
I don’t quite get the point of your last paragraph. Is hanging a poster from a bridge at a G20 summmit action or complaining? Who are the ‘eco-maniacs’ somebody is ‘fighting up with’?
Activism of the kind Greenpeace used in Pittsburgh can make the message spread very far, what your post is proof of. For some people it might be the last push to move from climate-awareness to individual action. For example Eleanor and Jodi posted their decision to modify their habits after the th!nk-meeting.
Off topic
I wonder if we really should start to dish out news agency releases on this platform. I personally will leave that to the big media outlets…
Hello, thanks to all for the reactons.
Somehow the journalist in me whants to inform about what`s happening around us, but also comment it. That`s why off topic mark of Fidelius is ok to me, but won`t stop me inform people what, where, how, with who, why has happened. I believe it`s not a sin to make that kind of blog.
For what was unclear - I don`t admire people, who complain. Do you think that rolling out a poster can change or inform about something? It is more useless to me. If you want to do something, than take a part in real action - like developing/offering measures, creating technologies or at least make campaignes with real action about becoming “green”. In other case we all can hang poster from the balkony, saying “I want higher salary”.
Dear Fidelius,
It is very funny if you think that the competition is all about giving opinions. In fact, being a blogger is to provide info. I believe you’re not very familiar with blogging after that comment of yours… Sorry to say that.
@Fidelius - the use of press release content in a blog post is a good example of how blogs treat news differently than mainstream media outlets. i probably would not heard of that story had it not been posted here. the use of opinion and news together is what makes blogs a totally unique form of media because it’s interactive and can start discussions like this one.
I am not really sure if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your great job is clearly identified.
How to lose weight fast
What can I use to hang up a vinyl banner without putting holes in my wall? I’m going to college in a week and want to hang my Superbad and Grindhouse banners up in my dorm, but the policy is that you can’t put holes in the wall.
A very brave action and moved. You should act now, don’t complain. If you just complain, all effort will go away.I really admired your action.
Hair salon software.
What a very brave action you have made on this one. I think you’ve got the attention of the people here. An act like this, the government should take a sit and talk to all concern regarding this action. This I think is the better idea, to hear your calling.

I actually still need advice, myself! I’m not qualified to answer that one, except to say - just film it! just keep doing it so that you develop the skills.

Thanks for the post. What do you all think of the future of blogging? I have been reading a lot about google’s attempt to gain preferential treatment for its site from internet providers.
