A Short Lesson In Mathematics
The Power plant “Nikola Tesla” in Obrenovac (TENT), with 14 blocks total installed power of 3.288 MW, has one third of the production of the total production potential of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS).
Every year, the power plant “Nikola Tesla” burns over 20 millions tones of lignite. The result of combustion is over 3.5 million tones of ash and slag a year, which are deposited in the outdoors, as well as 14.000.000 Nm smoke gas per hour, which is emitted in the air when the power plant works to their full capacity.
There is a system for air filtering, but it is obsolete in the technological sense and dates from the time when TENT was built, and dates from the first half of 1980’s. It’s true, today the power plants operate a policy that includes comprehensive ecological modernization and increase the reliability of existing equipment.
Let us now play around with the figures. (For the sake of easier calculating, we’ll use round figures.)
In Serbia today there are 8 million people. An average family has 4 members, which would hypothetically mean that citizens of Serbia are living in 2 million housing units. If each housing unit has on average 4 light bulbs of 100W, the total number of bulbs in households is 8 million. They spend 800.000 KW per hour. If we assume that all bulbs are turned on 5 hours a day, their daily consumption is 4 millions KW, which is 1 billion and 460 millions KW per year. If we also assume that the public lighting spends 10 times more energy, and combined with consumption in housing units, we’ll get a number approximately equal with the annual electricity production in power plant Nikola Tesla”
If all 100W light bulbs were be replaced with environmental friendly bulbs of 20W, electricity production in TENT could be reduced to 4/5, which means that TENT would spend 4 million tones of lignite instead of 20 million, and the emission of harmful gases in atmosphere would be reduced 5 times.
And another thing: 5 times less power consumption = 5 times more money in citizens’ wallets
With this equation, I conclude the short lesson in mathematics. Thank you for paying attention and do not forget to revise the above lesson. In one of the next hours will be testing your how much you have grasped.

If only would & could are turned into will & can
Great post, Sinisa. I really enjoy the original take on your articles.
This is a nice point of calculation to pay attention too, but still there could be some figures missing.. like fridge
Going to recalculate with changing average time of electricity work
You can say simple things for everyone.
Reality is often more complicated…
The question of the electric bulbs arises in a different way in France because with our nuclear energy the loss of heating by the bulbs must be caught up with by the heating. The sparing lamps are very polluting with manufacture!
