A price to pay for popularity

Published 16th December 2009 - 6 comments - 826 views -

Yesterday I was ready to leave for the COP15, hoping to get some good footage, meet interesting people for my posts and documentary, and eventually have my voice heard, particularly regarding the issue of water.

Coming here in Copenhagen was, at first, a bit disappointing. With the Danish text leaked, negotiations looking dark, Bella Centre closed, protests and police all over the city... I felt like my coming here (and subsequent Co2 emissions) was less and less valuable than I originally expected.

Then, like a thunder in the sky, my video "COP15 Priority number one" was featured on the Home Page of YouTube. It got 45,636 views in less than two days and became #99 - Most Viewed (All Time) - Non-profits & Activism - Italy.

Now, while this may sound like a pleasant and promising news, it also comes at a price. Right now it has about 200 comments, which is what's left of the hundreds of insults, brainless and mistyped shouts that I received. Somehow, the intelligence of the YouTube comments never cease to amaze me, which reminds me a great strip from XKCD:

YouTube XKCD

If it was extremely improbable that any of the world leaders saw this video, now it's becoming a bit more likely. A little bit. And if hundres of hate comments are the price to pay, it's alright. I can take it.

No hate here, Federico. There can be one one solution to problems as complicated and as disputed as climate change. This one will roll on and on and on with some give here and some take there. I’m looking forward to next big climate junket—might be in Mexico City, they say. At least it won’t be cold there. Cool glasses, by the way!

Oh, I wasn’t referring to you Eamonn smile

You wouldn’t believe the s**t I’ve been receiving, luckily I don’t get emotional on these things. tongue laugh

Well, some people love them others hate them.

I think you’d might call it “visibility” rather than “popularity” judging by the comments. Like you say though, most of them are mindless responses so I’m not sure you’d want to be in their favour really!

Anyhow in the words of George Orwell, there is only one thing worse than being talked about, not being talked about.

At least you got people talking. smile

You’re right, maybe visibility is the right term, still, I’m happy that a few comments are actually quite insightful. smile

I am just really wondering what you guys know about the new world order idea anyway? Can somebody tell me something about its history and future? Because if you are working for this without knowing than you should get to know.
