Ooh Pick Me, Pick Me: Round 2

Last week I wrote about the Britain's greenest city competition and the fact that Hull had come bottom two years in a row.

As I mentioned in my post, I wrote to Hull city council to get their reaction to the news and to find out if they're worried enough to introduce any new measures in time for next year's audit. Just getting a reply was a pleasant surprise, I have to say, and I'm very impressed by the response time. As for the content, I'll leave it up to you to decide...

Dear Ms Smallman

Acknowledgement of Feedback to Hull City Council Re:- Green City

Thank you for your feedback to the Hull City Council. We are always striving to improve and develop our services to you and regard your views as an important part of our improvement and development.

Cllr Woods, portfolio holder for environmental sustainability, said:

Whilst this is the latest report from Forum for the Future, it is really a snapshot of the city from a year ago and in some of the categories two years ago.  Over the last twelve months we have made improvements to the city’s environmental sustainability by addressing fuel poverty across the private and public sectors and reducing energy consumption.  Particularly significant  is the progress made by our new recycling arrangements and by the middle of next year, when we can calculate the full effect of the new system, Hull will be challenging to be one of the best recycling cities in the country.

Forum for the Future itself acknowledges that changes to the calculations to compile the report introduced this year have negatively affected Hull and therefore has not improved our position. We are discussing these changes with the report’s authors so that in the future we have a better understanding of the criteria and the city’s improved performance can be reflected better in next year’s report.

Once again I thank you for taking the time to contact Hull City Council and would like to assure you that your comments will be noted and acted upon where appropriate.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time should you have any further questions or queries.

Yours sincerely,

A bit of a cop out or a genuine response? What do you reckon? I'm thinking of replying and asking for some concrete and tangible proposals and projects - or am I being too harsh?!

This smells of a press release copy-and-pasted to me - contact them again and hold them accountable!

It does, doesn’t it?! Don’t worry I definitely will now!!

  • Nanne Zwagerman on 27th November 2009:

What Eleanor says. Ask them for each item what they have done and how much new funding they have allocated. It’d be useful to also get in touch with FFTF and ask them about their communication with the Hull City Council.

  • Lara Smallman on 27th November 2009:

Absolutely Nanne, and as soon as I get a response I’ll post it up here.

Don’t worry Adela, I’m already pressing them for a specific list of their so-called improvements!
