Guilty as Charged? Vote Now For Your Top Eco-Villain

By Lara Smallman - Published 30th October 2009 - 10 comments

Who's the biggest eco-villain of the noughties? A seemingly lighthearted question for everyone to ponder on today, courtesy of the Guardian. With so much damage being done, it's a wonder they've actually managed to narrow the list down to just ten culprits...

James Inhofe, for labelling global warming a hoax

Christopher Monckton, for prolific climate change denial

Sarah Palin, for putting oil and gas exploration ahead of the polar bear

Christopher Booker, for his columns of misinformation on climate change

Paul Golby, for trying to build new coal power stations in the UK

Geoff Hoon, for pushing through Heathrow's third runway

George Bush, for undoing decades of US progress on the environment

Donald Trump, for his controversial Scottish golf course

Jeremy Clarkson, for encouraging car use and denying climate change

Václav Klaus, for becoming Europe's most high-profile climate denier

What do you make of this top-10? Who has had a narrow escape and should really be up there with Bush? Conversely, who has no real place on this and should be let off the hook? I'm convinced that we can give the Guardian a run for their money and come up with a list of our own. Post your suggestions, and of course your explanations below. cool idea. Who’s your pick actually?

  • Lara Smallman on 30th October 2009:

I used to get quite irritated by climate change deniers, but they are ultimately entitled to their opinion, and they do get people talking about climate change.

Conveying misinformation is a big problem too, so I would agree with Mr Booker being up there. But again, it is not what I would deem a hanging offense!

I don’t know that I would necessarily pick one person, perhaps a country such as China for failing to get on board.

    Who’s your pick?

  • Daniel Nylin Nilsson on 30th October 2009:

Some of these names are unknown to me, but for sure George Bush II mwould make it to most villain-lists… I’d place my bet on him.

I guess someone responsible for the EU’s fisihing and agriculture policies should also be on this list.

China is not my favourite country in terms of human rights, but it seems they are actually doing more than they get credit for against climate change:

  • Lara Smallman on 30th October 2009:

That’s great news. Do you think there are any countries which aren’t pulling their weight?

  • Daniel Nylin Nilsson on 30th October 2009:

Hard to say… I think Obama is doing more than most, but I both hope and doubt what he can convince the US senate to follow… the EU is obviosuly doing a lot, but we should also pull a larger weight, since we have emitted lots, and since our resources are big.

But actually I think the biggest villains will not be at the COP15 meeting.

  • Mike on 31st October 2009:

Climate denier? None of these people deny that climate changes.

The biggest eco-villain of this decade is the environmental movement itself.

  • Vitezslav Kremlik on 02nd November 2009:

The greatest eco-villain is the one, who created the whole climate-change problem, right?

It was created by David Rockefeller and his Club of Rome (founded in 1968). As they admitted in the “The First Global Revolution” (1991), they invented this “problem”.

    So they committed the crime.

  • Vitezslav Kremlik on 02nd November 2009:

Note: I can see the contractions. First it was “climate change deniers” now it is even abbreviated to “climate deniers.” Which is both funny and misleading. Do you think that Vaclav Klaus does not believe in the existence of climate, clouds and wind?

  • Lara on 04th December 2009:

I agree with you on that one Vitezslav. Climate denial is a ridiculous term to use. The list of people above was nor something I wrote, it was taken from an article on eco-villains.

  • Lara on 04th December 2009:

    *not
