TH!NKers to attend COP15

Published 13th November 2009 - 31 comments

A lot has been said on this platform about what will happen at COP15.

Some of you have cautioned against high expectations, others are more optimistic. The outcome is difficult to predict but regardless of what happens, the COP15 meeting is a major event with a high potential to affect real change.

TH!NK ABOUT IT is sending three TH!NKers to COP15 from the 15 - 20 December, with accreditation provided by 350.org

TH!NKers have an edge on the estimated 12 - 15 thousand people expected to attend COP15  - having been to the Bella Centre before, you already know where at least two of the bathrooms are! wink

There will be a hefty amount of material to cover during the conference. In an interview with Environment & Energy Publishing, Yvo de Boer, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), broke the COP15 negotiations into four essentials.

They are:

1. How much are the industrialized countries willing to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases?

2. How much are major developing countries such as China and India willing to do to limit the growth of their emissions?

3. How is the help needed by developing countries to engage in reducing their emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change going to be financed?

4. How is that money going to be managed?

“If Copenhagen can deliver on those four points I’d be happy,” said de Boer.

De Boer's four points offer a breakdown of the COP15 negotiations and can provide a framework to TH!NKers covering the conference. But the biggest, flashiest issues aren't the only focus of COP15 - lesser known but equally important stories like this one, should be included in COP15 reporting.

As bloggers, you can report on the same stories as mainstream media in a different way, or choose topics that are overlooked. It's up to you.

What should the TH!NKers cover during their attendance at COP15? Suggest your topics via commenting on this post!!

Now, for the big reveal....

The selected TH!NKers e have contributed high quality posts and shown consistent effort and enthusiasm for TH!NK2.

They are:

Adela Trofin

Diego Casaes Silva

Federico Pistono

Congrats to Federico, Adela and Diego! We are all looking forward to what you'll produce at COP15!

There is still plenty more opportunities to win awards on TH!NK2 - 6 more Amazon.com gift certificates are up for grabs and the Macbook Pro! The next deadline is 18 November so keep up the great posts!

So well deserved! Congratulations to all of you guys. Looking forward to reading and seeing some really interesting perspectives from Copenhagen!

  • Benno Hansen on 13th November 2009:

Actually, I’d hoped for you, Hemant wink

btw you messed up the links to the bloggers’ pages.

  • Adela on 13th November 2009:

It was a big surprise for me & after the jaw dropping moment I did the happy dance smile

Then I got even more happy as, except the other Romanians, both Diego & Fede were 2 of the people I spent most time with at the launch event & they’re both great fellows. Speaking of which, congrats, guys!!
    Thank you, Hemant.

Benno, let’s hope Diego, Fede and I will make it for your unfulfilled hope. raspberry

  • Federico Pistono on 14th November 2009:

I share very much the same feeling you have, Adela.

I was genuinely surprised, for I thought there were at least a dozen of people who really deserved some sort of recognition and I really appreciated their work, so it was a great honour for me to hear about this decision.

As a matter of fact, I’m very happy that I’ll be able to see you and Diego again in Copenhagen, I like you both very much as people and as bloggers, I’m really excited about this upcoming experience!

  • Federico Pistono on 14th November 2009:

    @Benno
Hemant is very good, too. I had one of the most interesting discussion with him on the first night.

And yes, the links are kind of broken raspberry

  • Diego Casaes Silva on 14th November 2009:

I second that, Adela and Fede! I was really surprised =O Thank you all for choosing us to attend the COP15!

By the way, congratulations Adela and Fede!!! I’m looking forward to meet you and the EJC team in Copenhagen one more time =)

I guess I can speak for Adela and Federico when I say we’ll make sure to do a good job in the COP15 and bring some useful perspectives and data to this community!

    Once again, thanks.

    Cheers from Brazil!

  • Benno Hansen on 14th November 2009:

LOL Adela, unlike Earth I have a Plan B wink

  • Marta Gutierrez Benet on 14th November 2009:

    Guys!
My biggest congrats to you, the three totally deserved it!
So, we’ll be waiting for your posts here. Have a nice time there!!!

  • Tom Schaffer on 14th November 2009:

congratulations guys - go and kick ass in copenhagen wink

  • Ruth Spencer on 14th November 2009:

    Hi All,

Thanks for the FYI about the links. I’ve fixed them now. Congrats to everyone!

  • Lucy Setian on 14th November 2009:

Ruth, I sent you an email. I`ll appreciate if you can answer my question about the stats. It is important to view how my work has been evaluated. Thank you.

  • Lucy Setian on 14th November 2009:

Congrats to Adela and Federico, you deserve it.

  • Björn Obmann on 14th November 2009:

    Congratulations you three.
Looking forward to see you at Bella Center then. Drop me a line if you know when and where you will be. Would love to have a coffee with you again.
    grin

    CU in a month,
    Björn

  • Timothy Stewart on 15th November 2009:

So disappointing to see Diego up there. Why?
By any statistics, he doesn’t deserve it.
By the quality of posts he lacks tremendously.
There are far better people in this competition.
    How about Daniel? Or Lucy?
What is disheartening is - this was THE prize. To be able to be there at COP15 and cover issues.
This is undoubtedly a great letdown to some really good people.
    Federico deserves the prize.
I am sure in quality and impact of the posts we could have found better bloggers than Diego.
This competition so far has been interesting. But these results have killed it.

  • Timothy Stewart on 15th November 2009:

    Actually, we need an explanation:
The selected TH!NKers e have contributed high quality posts and shown consistent effort and enthusiasm for TH!NK2
    Diego - quality, how?
    Diego - effort, how?
    Diego - enthusiasm, how?

  • Lucy Setian on 15th November 2009:

Thank you for the support, Timothy. I`ll also appreciate to see the values of my efforts and their explanation.

  • Al-x4o on 15th November 2009:

Well, I am somehow sick and tired of reading comments such as ‘you three deserved it so much’! You’re kidding me, right?

All best to EJC, but what are all the stats for? As long as I remember it was a BLOGGERS’ contest, not a politologists or artists competition.
Which should mean that the best bloggers know how to involve people, to attract their attention, to provoke them to think. Not just to admire their ‘great’ style of writing and drawing.
So in my point of view, the nominations are almost ridiculous. Believe me, as a participant in the first Th!nk contest I know what is a real competition among bloggers. Peace!

  • Timothy Stewart on 15th November 2009:

I don’t agree with you Alx40…you make blogging very unidimensional. Which takes away from its meaning.
Blogging is what you make of it.
This contest has seen some really good work. Yes, even drawing.
Why can’t you draw a picture and say a million words?
You don’t have a clue. About blogging.
However, Diego? Really, this result has only one good candidate. Federico.

  • David Hiss on 15th November 2009:

    Congratulations to all of you!
Through Peacechild I also received an accreditation for the COP15. If there is time I would be very glad to meet other Thinkers there! Hope to hear from you!

  • Al-x4o on 15th November 2009:

@Timothy Stewart Well, my friend. Allow me to know a bit more about blogging. Including scientific contributions. You know what I mean. So please, don’t tell me that I don’t know what blogging is like. And who were you?
“involve people, to attract their attention, to provoke them to think” feels pretty dimensional to me.
And about the picture - of course you can say thousands, even millions of words. But these ones… Whatever…

  • Mike on 18th November 2009:

Congrats! I’m sure these ravenous environuts will make the difference!

  • Tuomo Björksten on 18th November 2009:

Congratulations to the winnters! Have a nice week in Copenhagen! smile

  • Federico Pistono on 18th November 2009:

Congrats! I’m sure these ravenous environuts will make the difference!

Yes, we will try to evangelise our credo, brainwash enough mind until we can get our communist-new-world-order-jewish-reptilian-anticonsumerist-alien-chemtrails agenda into place… damn it! You got us! /(>_<)\

  • Deborah Goldemberg on 18th November 2009:

I got to know the results from Diego himself yesterday night, at my São Paulo booklaunch and I was so happy for him!!! Well done Diego! Your dedication, enthusiasm and blogger resources have got you to the top prize! As for Fred, I knew from day one he’d make it!!! (I even told Diego that on the first day) And Adela, such a cool girl! I am sure the three of you will make a great coverage!
    Best of luck,
    Deborah

  • Nanne Zwagerman on 22nd November 2009:

Congratulations to our three reporters for COP15! You all deserve it and I hope you have a great experience. I’m very happy to hear that we’ll have at least 2 more th!nkers attending this event. I hope both Björn and David will have the time to do write some stories as well.

  • Muusa Kostilainen on 22nd November 2009:

Congratulations guys! And good luck in reporting!

  • Anita Kalmane on 24th November 2009:

Congratulations, guys, you have earned it - happy for you! smile

  • Eamonn Fitzgerald on 25th November 2009:

Congratulations to the lucky trio. I hope they will have a great time in Copenhagen. But if I may, I’d like the organizers of the competition to add a fourth name to the list: Vitezslav Kremlik. For me, he is the real star of this blogging venture. His energy is unsurpassable. His posts cannot be bettered for detail. And, most importantly, his willingness to challenge the consensus is admirable. In other words, he is everything that a blogger should be. Blogs emerged, in great part, as a response to the biased, boring Mainstream Media. Bloggers are alternative voices, representing alternative points of view. They are true activists and not bought-out, burned-out hacks parroting the party line. The EJC should now be brave enough to put its hand its pocket now and reward Vitezslav for his input, his courage and his blogging.

  • Benno Hansen on 25th November 2009:

I’m convinced Vitezslav is capable of fabricating an account of a visit from wherever he actually is :-D

  • Tom Schaffer on 25th November 2009:

Yeah, and this way he doesn’t have to deal with all those nasty liars and believers.

  • NewEarth Renewable Energy Inc. on 09th December 2009:

Everyone who is seeking a true global warming solution, please check out my company.  And especially those who will actually be attending Cop15 please look for us, we will be there trying to make an impact, and hopefully a difference.  Please show us love and support.
