Seven Continents Plan Events For World’s Biggest Climate Change Demonstration

Published 22nd October 2009 - 0 comments

Global Climate Action Day is Saturday, October 24th.

4,000 events in 170 countries on 7 continents are taking part in the campaign spearheaded by 350.org.

With the Copenhagen summit now less than 6 weeks away, Global Action Day will send a loud message to presidents and prime ministers that the world will be watching them in Copenhagen.

Earlier this month, Blog Action Day, was a huge success, with over 27,000 blog posts joining the fight to raise climate change awareness online. On Saturday, it's a chance for everyone to leave their computers, go out and make a statement offline.

Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature, the first widely read book on global warming, explained via e-mail to AlterNet, an environmental blog, why he co-founded 350.org:

"The U.S. and China and governments and corporations change when pressure is applied to them. There is only one place that pressure can come from, which is a movement of people. Hence 350.org."

Global Action Day events can take any size and shape so long as the number 350 is featured somewhere.

Highlights of planned events include a rally at McMurdo station in Antarctica, and a meeting on the Dead Sea between Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians.

In Australia, 350 tall ships will glide by the Sydney Opera House.

Three hundred fifty people will bungee jumping off old power station towers in Soweto, South Africa.

A huge outdoor concert and aerial photo shoot in Mexico City is planned.

An expedition is under way to Chacaltaya in Bolivia, site of the first Andean glacier to disappear forever. When the expedition arrives, the indigenous Aymara will conduct a blessing ceremony to try to protect the glaciers that are left.

Ceremonies will take place at Machu Picchu, Peru, and a banner parade will wind past the pyramids in Egypt.

In Hungary, hundreds of bathers will jump into the public baths in Budapest and do a 350 synchronized swimming performance.

In Nepal, over a thousand young people and monks will march to the Swayambhunath world heritage site temple where they will form a large 350 with traditional lanterns.

In the United States, 350 people will dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller in Seattle -- because if we don't stop global warming, we might as well be undead

Over 170 actions are expected in China alone. There will even be small events in Kabul, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, areas where people already have plenty on their minds.

There are nearly 2000 events planned worldwide. And if you don't see one on this list, you can always start your own. 350.org has everything you'll need to set up you own individual action - posters, organization guides, and always plenty of ideas...

Go for a hike, get on a bike, use chalk to draw a street mural; the day's actions are meant to be as accessible as possible. The ultimate goal is to get people involved. Whatever you do, make sure you take a photo. 350.org collects and streams them in their Action Gallery and Flickr group.

This interactive map is here to show you what actions are already taking place in and around your hometown.
