Climate Live Action Day!

Published 25th September 2009 - 0 comments

There's been a lot of discussion on this platform about "action".

What does it mean to take action against climate change? Getting arrested? Riding a bike? Blogging?

The International Climate Action Day on 24 October, 2009 will put a global perspective on the definition of this highly debatable term. And according to 350.org, action can be anything, anywhere, so long as the number 350 is a part of it somehow.

350.org, named for the number of parts-per-million that scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere, is spearheading a worldwide campaign on the 24th called Live Action Day.

It encourages individuals from all over the globe to start an "Action" in any creative form to "to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet," says the mission statement.

The only requirement is that the number 350 is featured in whatever action you choose.

350.org is available in 13 languages and contains information for those starting an Action, including posters and print-outs, networking opportunities, media support and all kinds of other advice. It is set up as an open-source campaign. Anyone who has an idea or suggestion is welcome to contribute via http://www.350.org/contact

Past Actions are featured in the following Flickr slideshow http://www.flickr.com/photos/350org/show/ and include bike rides, hikes, gatherings and human art displays.

So far over 2,000 actions have been set up. You can click and search the map below to find one near you. Whether you start your own action or join one near you, the results will be highly flippable so mark your calendars!
